Africote Universal Undercoat is a general purpose, solvent based coating designed to be applied onto (A) raw, unpainted substrates, or (B) previously painted surfaces when a high build, sandable first coat is needed that can be applied by brush or roller and will aid in producing a strong, smooth base for subsequent finishing coats.
A. As a preparation coat onto non-metallic surfaces, universal undercoat acts as a base coat for either water based or solvent based products. It is necessary to ensure that timber surfaces are sand papered as well as degreased and cleaned before painting with universal undercoat. Although it is not compulsory to use a metal primer on steel surfaces before applying universal undercoat, it is advisable to do so in coastal regions, or where the possibility of occurring rust is present. Most plastic surfaces need to be treated with a plastic primer, however satisfactory results can be achieved by cleaning and sandpapering the plastic surface first. It is advisable to experiment on a test area before painting plastic surfaces.
B. When repainting previously painted surfaces and doubt exists as to the compatibility between the old and new product to be used, it is advisable to first apply a "tie" coat in the form of Universal Undercoat.
C. Further uses for the Universal Undercoat is restricted only by the products flat matt and limited off white final appearance. It is often used as a general maintenance paint, (when a cosmetic finish is not required), thanks to its excellent adhesion properties and many varied substrates.
